Featured Topic: Map Creation

Maps are a critical component of many modern applications, from passenger vehicles and commercial fleets to e-bikes and smart city infrastructure. All these applications require highly accurate and up-to-date maps. Standard road maps aren’t precise or detailed enough, and HD maps are prohibitively expensive to build and maintain. The solution? A simple combination of cameras and precise GNSS.

With a camera or dashcam, the vehicle captures features in its environment — road signs, lane markings, barriers, poles, and more. Precise GNSS provides the absolute positioning needed to anchor those features directly into a global reference frame, down to the centimeter.

Precise Map Creation

Precise Mapping is Changing the Game

  • Map maintenance: Road features are constantly changing due to road work, installation of new signs or signals, and real-time conditions such as potholes or ice. Precision mapping can quickly and easily match up perceived features with map features to determine if there have been changes to the environment, making map maintenance a simple and affordable task.
  • Highly scalable: Unlike expensive multi-sensor rigs that can only be installed on a handful of vehicles, precision-enabled cameras can be installed in millions of vehicles — commercial or personal — for an incredibly scalable solution that sources billions of data points in real time.
  • Ecosystem impact: By reducing the cost of map creation and maintenance, data collection need no longer be bound by the scope of a single use case. Map creators can easily and cost-effectively capture an incredibly rich set of data to enable numerous use cases including automated driving, fleet efficiency, regulatory compliance, city planning, and more.

Swift Profiled in Forbes
Global positioning systems, or GPS, are great for helping to guide motorists to a location, or at least let them know where they are. However, GPS only gets you close, rather than to a precise spot.

As the auto industry moves towards vehicles with even higher levels of autonomy, the need for precise location technology becomes even more acute.

A company that has developed such technology has captured the eyes, and financial backing of investors...

How GNSS Corrections Are Powering Safer, Smarter Micromobility
Micromobility has seen explosive growth over the last decade, transforming how people move through cities. And as shared e-scooter and bike fleets scale, so do the expectations from both from riders and regulators. To unpack the role of precise positioning in this evolving space, we spoke with Jochen Bruns, Regional Director for Europe, at Swift Navigation. Jochen is a seasoned expert in IoT applications with over two decades of experience and a foundation in technical computer science...

The Unexpected Journey to Self-Driving
When we think about self-driving cars, many of us picture a futuristic vehicle with no steering wheel, whisking passengers through city streets. While full autonomy is once again capturing headlines with the launch of Tesla’s robotaxi service in Austin and Uber’s recently announced plans to launch 20,000 robotaxis, the most impactful and widely accessible innovations in autonomous driving are emerging from a different, less flashy, but ultimately more pervasive path...
